A League Division 1 – Round 1

Skryne made their much anticipated return to Division 1 action this evening in their opening A League game against St. Peter’s Dunboyne. Despite the poor weather over the last week, the Skryne pitch held up very well and the weather remained dry but a little breezy throughout the game.

Skryne played with the breeze in a first half in which they dominated. Ian Davis made a welcome return to the Skryne Senior team and showed he hadn’t lost his eye for goal when he swung over Skryne’s opening score with only a minute on the clock. Dunboyne replied in the third minute with their only point of the first half to level matters. Skryne spurned several opportunities before registering their second point of the half, a free from team captain Paddy O’Rourke. Dunboyne were finding it difficult to get a foothold in the game as Skryne dominated around the middle of the park with Harry Rooney and Ciarán Lenehan reigning supreme. Further points from O’Rourke and Darragh Campion extended Skryne’s lead before Bryan Davis’s superb effort rebounded off the crossbar and away following some great link up play from the Skryne forwards. Dunboyne also hit the woodwork a minute later, but that was as close as they got to Skryne in the first half. Skryne finished the half off with a further 3 points, one each from Bryan Davis, Mark Battersby and Paddy O’ Rourke to go in at half time with a well deserved 6 point lead. Half-time score: Skryne 0-07, St. Peter’s, Dunboyne 0-01.

Harry Rooney was withdrawn by Skryne at half-time as he is part of the Meath squad who face Roscommon in the National League tomorrow. Skryne were out early following the half time interval and seemed eager to get the job done. However, Dunboyne showed more endeavour in the second half and got the scoring underway with 2 points in quick succession to close the gap to just 4 points. Paddy O’ Rourke pointed a free for Skryne before Dunboyne hit back with a pointed free of their own. Darragh Campion bagged his second of the game midway through the half after a fine burst from defence by Paddy Carpenter who linked up with Mark Battersby before laying it off to Campion who made no mistake for Skryne’s best score of the game. A pointed free from Paddy O’Rourke was cancelled out by a point from play from Dunboyne. Dunboyne then added to their tally with another point. Campion narrowly missed a scoreable opportunity on 27 minutes but showed superb character by dusting himself off and scoring a fine point less than a minute later when a similar chance presented itself. Skryne’s final point came straight from the training ground when Paddy O’Rourke got on the end of a fine move to swing over his fifth of the game.

Skryne had excellent performances up front from Campion, O’Rourke and Co. while in defence Robbie Clarke impressed throughout along with Declan Morley and Eoghan Green who ensured Des Mc Aviney had a quiet evening in goals. Overall Skryne will be very satisfied with this first outing. They were well served by the substitutes who played their part when they came on and with no less than 14 substitutes on the bench this evening, all bodes well for the season ahead with plenty of strength in depth. Final Score: Skryne 0-12, St. Peter’s Dunboyne 0-07.
