League win for Dunshaughlin

Skryne 1-07 Dunshaughlin 0-13

A League Division 1, Round 11

Another League defeat for Skryne leaves them in danger of relegation with only two games remaining. This was a tight game all through but Skryne missed too many chances on a night when conditions were difficult and not conducive to good quality football. Dunshaughlin were the stronger team and overall deserved their win.

Skryne had Harry Rooney back from County duty with Meath in Derry yesterday and also had minor players Darragh Campion and Eoin Smyth back from their exploits in the Leinster Minor championship. Dunshaughlin also had their County players available again. Skryne started brightly and Mark Battersby opened the scoring from a free but then Dunshaughlin took over and led at the break by 7 points to 3.

The second half began like the first with Skryne on top and Mark Battersby scored a goal from the penalty spot to cut the lead to the minimum. The Black and Ambers regrouped and scored two quick points to go 3 up again. To their credit the Blues then responded and two well taken points from Daragh Campion and Paddy Fox had them back in contention with just one score between them once again. But Dunshaughlin finished the match much stronger and ran out winners by adding 4 more points to just one Mark Battersby free for Skryne.

Dunshaughlin were physically much stronger and may have been lucky to finish with 15 players on the pitch but Skryne have to realise that in senior football you have to earn your win as no team is going to hand out League points on a plate. In those crucial last ten minutes of this game the Blues missed three points from poor finishing and also dropped balls short either into the keepers hands or to where Caoimhin King cleaned up for Dunshaughlin in the fullback position.

Skryne had good performances from Eoghan Greene in defence, Aidan Tuite and Harry Rooney at midfield, while Darragh Campion did well when moved out from the corner to centre forward.

Skryne – Felim O’Rourke. Eoghan Greene, Mark Harrington, Mark Jordan. Niall Lenehan, Ciaran Lenehan, Stephen O’Brien. Aidan Tuite, Harry Rooney. Declan Morley, Paddy Fox (0-2), Eoin Smyth. Niall Morley, Mark Battersby (1-4), Darragh Campion (0-1).

Subs used – Conor O’Brien and Dermot Brennan.
