A League Division 1 – Round 5

Skryne travelled to Stamullen this evening on a perfect evening for football, with the St. Pats pitch in superb condition considering the recent inclement weather.

Skryne were without the services of Harry Rooney, Donie Ryan and the unfortunate Paddy Carpenter who picked up an ankle injury in training this week. This was far from a classic with both teams depriving each other of space, which resulted in a lot of scrappy play, loose passes and wayward shooting. Skryne kicked off proceedings with points from Darragh Campion and Bryan Davis with Pats responding with two points of their own. The crucial score of the game came in the 11th minute when Darragh Campion and Bryan Davis swapped passes before Campion smashed the ball off the Pats crossbar. Paddy O’Rourke was quickest to the rebound and he hammered the ball past the Pats keeper to register the only goal of the game. Bryan Davis was unlucky not to bag Skryne’s second goal when his goal bound effort was batted away and out for a 45 by the Pats keeper. Paddy O’Rourke converted the 45 and this was followed by a Conor O’Brien point which extended Skryne’s lead to five points. Two points from Pats closed the gap before O’Rourke added a free for Skryne. Pats tapped over a point with 3 minutes of the half remaining. However, O’Rourke with another free and an Eoin Smyth point from a move which began with a fine Stephen O’Brien catch was Skryne’s final score of the half and ensured that Skryne went in five points to the good at half time. Half-time score: St. Patricks 0-05, Skryne 1-07

The second half was a low scoring affair with both sides finding scores hard to come by. Conor O’Brien opened the scoring with his second point of the game. St. Pats tapped over two frees for their only scores of the half. Ian Gillett was excellent all night in the Skryne goal and commanded his area whenever the need arose. He was called into action midway through the half when he dived smartly to his right to grasp a goal-bound effort and preserve his clean sheet. Paddy O’Rourke added to his tally with a pointed free on 13 minutes. It took until the 31st minute for another score to appear and that too came from the boot of Paddy O’Rourke.  Skryne maintained their unbeaten run and will retain their position at the top of the league. Final Score: St. Patricks 0-07, Skryne 1-10.
