A League Division 2 – Round 3

Skryne got their first win of the season in this A League Division 2 match played in Syddan. After defeat in Ratoath and a draw at home to Dunderry this was a welcome change of fortune for the Blues and they fully deserved this victory. They were on top from the start in a match played in windy conditions on a heavy pitch which held up well after all the rain this week.

Syddan had the advantage of the fairly strong breeze as they played into the road goals in the first half. But it was Skryne who started the game stronger and raced into a 4 point lead through Paddy Carpenter, Mark Battersby and 2 from Eoin Smyth. Syddan slowly got into the game with 2 points of their own and then a fortuitous goal deflected in from a forty five put them ahead and they held that one point lead all the way to half time when the score was Syddan 1-6 Skryne 0-8.

The Green and Gold brigade did score the first point of the second half to briefly increase their lead but then the Blues took over and held their opponents to just two further points for the remainder of the match.

Man-of-the-match Adam O’Sullivan had his best game for some time and scored four great points from his wing back position. He got great assistance from half time substitute Brian Davis who arrived late due to work commitments and between them they guided Skryne to victory. Veteran Aidan Tuite turned back the clock and ruled the roost in midfield while upfront Paddy Fox was back to something near his best.

Although forced to field without the injured trio of Ciaran Lenehan, Darragh Campion and John Morley while Paddy Doherty dislocated his finger in the warm up Skryne made light of these setbacks and in a good team performance were on top for most of the game.

Skryne – Ian Gillett. Declan Morley, Mark Harrington, Eoghan Greene. Paddy Carpenter (0-1), Niall Lenehan, Adam O’Sullivan (0-4). Aidan Tuite, Andrew Moore. Eoin Smyth (0-4), Patrick O’Rourke (0-2), Jason Fox. Paddy Fox (1-2), Mark Battersby (0-3), Niall Morley (0-1).

Subs used – Brian Davis (1-1), Frank Carty, Ronan McCabe and Barry Clarke.
