Serious setback for Skryne

Curraha 1-11, Skryne 0-12

A League Division 2 – Round 8

Having won their last five League matches Skryne went into this match as favourites to continue their winning run but nobody told Curraha. This game was played yesterday evening in fine weather conditions  on a rock hard pitch which proved difficult for both sides.

Curraha began the game at top speed and immediately had Skryne in trouble with their pace, running straight at the visitors defence and surely could have been out of sight by half time. They missed a goal – due to a superb save from Ian Gillett – and about five points in the first ten minutes. The fact that there was only one point between the teams 0-4 to 0-3 at the break was due mainly to Curraha’s inaccuracy rather than Skryne’s good play.

The second half was much better for the Blues and substitute Bryan Davis had Skryne back in the game with three excellent points. The sides were level at 0-11 each going into injury time but then Skryne conceded the only goal of the game and it was too late to recover from this bodyblow. They did have one more chance when their best player Ciaran Lenehan was badly fouled resulting in a sending off for the Curraha player and a close in free for Skryne. Ciaran recovered sufficiently to take the free himself and his bullettlike shot was deflected over the bar to leave the final score of 1-11 to 0-12 and a win for the home side.

This was a close and exciting game for the big crowd played in the proper spirit and lived up to its billing as a local ‘Derby’ not to be missed.

This time the Home side fully deserved their victory because they were the much ‘hungrier’ team and seemed to want this result much more than the visitors.

The three players already mentioned – Gillett, Lenehan and Davis were best for Skryne and they got most help particularly in the second half, from Eoghan Greene, Ronan McCabe and Darragh Campion.

Skryne- Ian Gillett. Eoghan Greene (0-1), Mark Harrington, Barry Clarke. Ronan McCabe (0-1), Declan Morley, Adam O’Sullivan. Aidan Tuite, Darragh Campion (0-1). Paddy Carpenter, Paddy Fox (0-1), Eoin Smyth. Colm Craigie, Ciaran Lenehan (0-4), Mark Battersby.

Subs used – Bryan Davis (0-3), Jason Fox and Dermot Brennan.
