B League Division 1 – Round 1

The B League Division 1 began this evening with a defeat for Skryne at home to Summerhill. The five point difference at the end of this match is probably a fair reflection on the game overall. Even though the Summerhill goal came with the last kick of the match and was the result of a short kick-out it did not affect the final scoreline. In fact the Skryne goal came in the exact same way so they cancelled each other out.

Skryne missed far too many scores in the first half, shooting a number of wides and wasting two goal chances as well. Having said that the Hill were the better team and fully deserved their halftime lead of 0-7 to 0-3 after playing from the road end with no breeze to contend with.

On a bitterly cold night for the small number of spectators, the Blues began the second half much better. Paddy Doherty grabbed the lucky goal and points from Cian Lynch and John Morley had the teams level midway through this half. When Frank Carty placed Doherty for a good point to put Skryne in the lead for the first time in the match it looked like the Blues had the momentum to go on and win. But despite good defensive work from Mark Harrington, Ronan McCabe and Colm Craigie it was Summerhill who finished stronger and punished each mistake made by the Skryne men.

Aidan Tuite and David McGoldrick held their own at midfield but it was in the forward division where more combination and scoring power will be needed to win matches.  Scoring 1-6 will not be sufficient to win any game but as it was the first outing of the season there is plenty of time to put it right.

I’m sure most clubs and their followers would prefer if the season started a little later when the weather might be a bit kinder and the evenings a bit longer.

Skryne – Des McAvinney. Barry Clarke, Mark Harrington, Colm Craigie. Cian Lynch (0-1), Ronan McCabe, Mark Jordan. Aidan Tuite, David McGoldrick. Jason Fox, John Morley (0-2), Andrew Moore. Sean Cassidy, Paddy Doherty (1-1), Niall Morley (0-2).

Subs used – Paddy Fox, Frank Carty and Allan Carty.
