B League Division 1 – Round 6

Skryne travelled to Navan for this B League Div 1 match versus O’Mahonys on another fine evening for football. Unfortunately 13 of the Skryne players who started the game had played B League Div 4 the night before in Dunsany. Add to that 3 of the 4 substitutes used had also played in that match. Already without our minors because of their upcoming final, this team was on a ‘hiding to nothing’ from start to finish. We then lost Martin Mulvaney to a hamstring injury early in the game.

Leaving excuses to one side the Navan men were much better than the Blues on the night and 3 early goals had Skryne playing catch up for the rest of the match. O’Mahonys led by 4-4 to 1-2 at the break and were full value for their supremacy in this half. Skryne to their credit made a game of it in the second half and gave as good as they got for the first 20 minutes until injuries and tiredness set in. It was double scores after 10 minutes of this half 4-6 to 2-3 but 2 goals, one from Conor Keogh and one from Declan Mulvey left only 4 points between the sides after 18 minutes with the score 4-7 to 4-3. Missed chances of further goals didn’t help the situation as Skryne hit the post on two occasions and had a couple of bad wides which could have had the O’Mahonys a little scared entering the final 10 minutes. But that was as good as it got for the Blues and the Navan men ran out easy winners in the end.

With A League matches fixed for tonight teams who played last night face the same problem we encountered from Monday night. But in our case we have had to play adult matches 3 nights in a row and nobody can tell me that’s fair. GAA guidelines suggest that no player should play twice in 24 hours – one day’s rest after a match or a training session – so how can we now ask some players to play 3 nights in succession. Every Clubs second team is a back up to their first team and it is inevitable that players overlap from B League Div 1 to A League Div 1 therefore these matches should not be played on consecutive nights.

Skryne – Des McAvinney. David Harrington, Martin Mulvaney, Pauric Murphy. James Conroy, Mark Harrington, Niall Morley. David McGoldrick, David Lynch. Allan Carty (0-1), Neal Burke, Kieran O’Rourke. Conor Keogh (2-0), John Quinn (1-9), Felim O’Rourke (0-1).
Subs used – Declan Mulvey (1-1), Shane McEnroy, Adrian Doyle and Oisin Coyle.
