2 out of 2 for Skryne!!

Skryne 0-12 St. Peters, Dunboyne 1-07

Feis Cup. Group B, Round 2

For the second week running, Fr. McManus Park was the venue for another entertaining and tight encounter. Hosts Skryne served up a gutsy display that saw them prevail against a dogged Dunboyne side to secure back to back victories in the Feis Cup.

Robbie McCarthy was the focal point for Dunboyne’s attack and it was a pointed free from his trusty boot that opened the scoring inside the first minute of the game. Skryne’s Jason Reddy who has assumed the mantle of free taker following the departure of Paddy O’Rourke to Oz, struck the first of his six pointed frees to level matters. Dunboyne replied with their first point from play to edge ahead again. A brilliant pass from Eoghan Greene set Eoin Smyth on a rampaging run forward. Smythy was halted is his tracks when fouled close in. Jason Reddy made no mistake with the free and it was honours even again. A Robbie McCarthy free saw Dunboyne sneak ahead again. Another forage forward by the marauding Eoin Smyth yielded a third point for Skryne. Skryne took the lead for the first time in the game when a pinpoint crossfield pass from Jason Reddy was fielded brilliantly by Mark Battersby for a mark which he  duly tapped over. Robbie McCarthy levelled again from a free and then Batts was on hand to bag his second point of the game to send Skryne in a point to the good at half-time on a scoreline of Skryne 0-05, St. Peters, Dunboyne 0-04.

Dunboyne were fastest out of the blocks in the second half and hit Skryne with an early sucker punch when they took advantage of some loose play by Skryne in the middle of the park and launched a swift counter attack. For the first time during the course of the game, the Skryne defence was exposed with runners coming from all directions swapping passes. The ball eventually fell to a Dunboyne forward who found himself free with only the keeper to beat. He wasn’t found wanting in this regard and gave Dessie McAviney no chance when he finished to the net from close range. Dunboyne added another point from play to leave a goal between the 2 sides. Skryne didn’t panic and another Jason Reddy free steadied the ship. Dunboyne did tack on another point on the 12th minute of the half, but from then on Skryne took control of the game slotting over 3 unanswered points, from Harry Rooney, Jason Reddy(free) and substitute Paddy Fox, to restore parity. A fine mark from Robbie McCarthy, which was slotted over, saw Dunboyne take the lead again with 9 minutes of normal time remaining. Skryne pressed forward again and were met with some over-zealous defending from the Dunboyne men which yielded more frees. These frees (2) were dispatched with aplomb by the ice cool Jason Reddy despite facing into a stiff breeze. Skryne lead by the minimum as the game entered injury time. Skryne goalkeeper Des McAviney and his defensive colleagues were called into action early in injury time during a goalmouth scramble where Dunboyne looked certain to score a goal. Des and Co. somehow managed to block away the Dunboyne shot. Skryne held on as Dunboyne searched for the equaliser. Another Dunboyne attack was thwarted and the ball was sent down the field to Conor O’ Brien who made space and slotted over much to the delight of the Skryne crowd who let out a roar of approval. Skryne showed lots of spirit and guts to secure the 2 point win. Final score: Skryne 0-12, St. Peters, Dunboyne 1-07.
