The Hill Defeat the Blues

Summerhill 1-17 Skryne 2-12

JAFC Group C – Round 5

This Junior Championship clash between Skryne and Summerhill played in Bective on Monday last produced some very entertaining football for the small attendance. The game was played on a well mentained Bective pitch in good conditions with little or no breeze to contend with.

The old saying of a game of two halves was very relevant in this case as Skryne completely dominated the first half and should have led by more than five points at halftime while Summerhill took over for all of the second half.

The reason for the Blues dominance in that first half stemmed from their midfielders – Aidan Tuite and Tommy Carpenter – who were on top for all of this period and the accuracy of Allan Carty upfront whose two goals gave Skryne an eight point lead coming towards half time. But the most important score of the game fell to Summerhill when they scored their goal in the 27th minute to narrow the gap to just four points. Craig Nolan responded with an excellent point for Skryne to leave the halftime score – Skryne 2-8 Summerhill 1-6.

The second half began with Summerhill correcting their problems at midfield where they mopped up all the breaks and outscored Skryne by 11 points to 4 in this 30 minutes. Even so the match was in the melting pot right up to the full time whistle and had Allan Carty’s effort for a hat-trick not come back off the post the result might have been different.

Apart from the excellent four lads already mentioned Skryne had good performances from Keeper Des McAvinney and Andrew Moore, Keith Donoghue and Frank Carty in defence. The forwards had to feed off scraps in that second half but never lacked effort with Felim O’Rourke, Neal Burke and substitute Sean Cassidy trying all they could to stem the Summerhill tide.

Skryne – Des McAvinney. Jack Dardis, Dermot Brennan, Andrew Moore. Frank Carty (0-1), Mark Jordan, Keith Donoghue. Aidan Tuite, Tommy Carpenter. Craig Nolan (0-2), Neal Burke (0-1), Ciaran Finnerty. Allan Carty (2-6), Paddy Carpenter (0-1), Felim O’Rourke (0-1).
Sub used –  Sean Cassidy.
