DEFEAT FOR SKRYNE IN JUNIOR C CHAMPIONSHIP

Blackhall Gaels 2-15 Skryne 0-12

JCFC Group C – Round 3

The scoreline does not do justice to this very evenly contested Junior C Championship match played on a beautiful summer evening in Kilcloon. Skryne’s third team were well in this game all through against a strong Blackhall Gaels second team and it was only late in the game that the Gaels made the difference on the scoreboard. Their two goals were of the fortuitous variety and their second deflected one arrived very late and was their last score. Add to that Skryne missed a penalty when Kevin O’Reilly’s shot was well saved by Robbie Butler in the Blackhall goals. How Butler was allowed stay on the pitch to save the penalty is a mystery as he was the one who “pulled down” Johnny Quinn close to the goal line to concede it in the first place – Surely a black card. Having said that the Gaels, with a number of recent former senior players, were just a little stronger than Skryne and deserved their victory but certainly not by a nine point margin.

Skryne began the match really well and the excellent midfielder Jack O’Donnell  raced through to score the first point of the game straight from the throw in. Both teams played former senior players in their full forward lines – Brian Smyth and Martin Mulvany for Skryne and Tadgh Brosnan and Mark Ferris for the Gaels – all four proved to be a problem for the respective defences. As stated this first half was very evenly contested and at half time the teams were level at six points each.

Once again The Blues began the second half brightly with Smyth putting them in front early on. Then came the first all important goal for the Gaels fourteen minutes into the half. An excellent ‘Mark’ by John O’Brien in midfield resulted in him putting the ball in behind the Skryne defence for Stephen Traynor to blast past Robbie Whyte.

Skryne responded well to this setback with some lovely points but the missed penalty and the late goal put a false look on the scoreboard.
A good performance from all the Skryne players so no need to mention anyone as all seventeen who played have done the club proud.
