Good Win for Skryne Juniors

Moylagh 1-10 Skryne 1-14

Junior A Football Championship. Group B, Round 3

Skryne kept their Junior A Championship hopes alive with this win over Moylagh in Athboy this evening.

Although short a number of players due to injuries and holidays Skryne overcame these problems with a fine team display. On a nice evening for football with little or no breeze to affect the play the teams were evenly matched throughout the first half with the Blues narrowly on top at the break 0-7 to 0-5.

Skryne edged in front by four points midway through the second half with some excellent scores but the Moylagh men drew level again with only five minutes left of normal time. Their goal was of the ‘lucky’ variety and seemingly against the run of play. But normal service was restored when Niall Morley got on the end of a three man move from back to front to shoot a fine goal. The game was still in the balance in injury time until Felim O’Rourke added two insurance points late on.

A feature of the game was the number of well taken scores from play by the Skryne men (1-11 in total) whereas six of Moylaghs’ points came from placed balls. Apart from the scorers who starred for Skryne there were also great displays from Dermot Brennan, Barry Clarke and Ronan McCabe (especially in the second half) in defence while the midfield and forwards combined very well as a unit. Hopefully they can keep it going in the round 4 on Friday next v Simonstown in Bective.

Skryne – Des McAvinney. Dermot Brennan, Eoghan Greene, Barry Clarke. Ronan McCabe, Martin Mulvaney (0-1), Darren Fox (0-3). Brian Smyth, David McGoldrick. Sean Cassidy, Eoin Smyth (0-1), Declan Mulvey. Felim O’Rourke (0-6), Allan Carty, Niall Morley (1-3).

Subs – John Quinn, Shane McEnroy, Oisin Coyle.
