Skryne’s Second Strings Sweet Success

Skryne 1-12 Navan O’Mahonys 0-12

Junior A Football Championship. Group C, Round 1

Skryne overcame old rivals Navan O’Mahonys in this first round of the Junior A Football Championship played in windy Dunshaughlin today, Sunday. After Friday’s disappointment in the SFC against St. Pats this was the shot in the arm the Club needed.

Skryne had the benefit of the strong wind in the first half on a pitch made very slippery on top as a result of a heavy downpour just before the throw-in. Playing into the road goals Skryne used the breeze to their advantage and soon had an early lead of 1-2 to no score thanks to a well worked goal finished by Paddy Doherty after a good run from Niall Morley. O’Mahonys took a little time to settle but when they did they took their scores well, kicking five points from play before half time. The Blues also took their scores well with John and Niall Morley along with Allan Carty very accurate even when under pressure and they gave Skryne a half time lead of 1-6 to 0-6.

The second half continued in the same vein with the sides trading point for point right up to the final whistle with the same margin between them at the finish. Skryne with a good mix of young players and experienced men played a very controlled game against the strong breeze in that second half especially as is it seemed that a three point lead at the break would not be sufficient. Felim O’Rourke, Allan Carty, David McGoldrick and Ronan McCabe proved more than capable of helping the younger brigade of Robbie Clarke, Michael Doherty, Timmy Lennon, Frank Carty and David Carroll to settle into the pressure of Championship football.

But this was a good team performance and the three Morleys – (Declan, Niall and John) – Barry Clarke, Dermot Brennan, David Lynch and Paddy Doherty all played their part. Oisin Gryson and John Quinn came in to steady the ship late on in the game.

So, all in all, the Skryne management team can be very satisfied with their teams effort in the first Championship game of the season.

Skryne – Felim O’Rourke. Timmy Lennon, Michael Doherty, Barry Clarke. Declan Morley, Robbie Clarke, Dermot Brennan. David McGoldrick, David Lynch. Frank Carty, Ronan McCabe, Niall Morley (0-4). John Morley (0-3), Allan Carty (0-4), Paddy Doherty (1-1).

Subs used – David Carroll, Oisin Gryson and John Quinn.
