Junior A Championship – Skryne defeat Drumconrath

By josephobrien Mon 13th Aug

Skryne 3 – 9

Drumconrath 4 – 4

A well balanced team featuring five of Skryne’s  young stars from the minor ranks together with more seasoned players scored a terrific win against Drumconrath in Kilberry on Sunday.  Skryne fielded five of their mirrors in this match and every one of them acquitted themselves with distinction.  The game was barely a minute old when Jamie Jordan’s well struck penalty found the net and laid the foundation for this win.  Drumconrath hit back immediately with a point but this was cancelled out by one from debutant Neill Burke on 5 minutes.  Less than two minutes later  Burke struck again when he finished a well worked move to the net to make the score 2 – 1 to 0 – 1.  Drums hit back with two points but Conor O’ Brien got one back for the Skryne men.  Taking example from the keeper in the senior game on Saturday night, Paul McGoldrick made a great save to deny Drumconrath a goal from a penalty.  How between the 25th and 30th minute Drums scored three goals to go in at the break 3 -3 to 2 -2 ahead.

Skryne resumed the second half with three quick points from Jamie Jordan, David Lynch and Neill Burke leaving just one point in it.  Jordan then struck for his second goal and Neil burke scored again to make the score with three quarters of the game gone Skryne 3 – 6, Drumconrath 3 – 3 .  Skryne could now sense victory and pressed home their advantage with further points from Burke, O’Brien and substitute Shane Cunningham.  Due to a number of injuries, referee Donal Smyth played a total of 6 minutes broken play and Drumconrath pressed hard to get back on terms during this time.  With 5 minutes of this period gone they scored a point and then in the final minute they were awarded a penalty which was scored.  However they had left it too late and Skryne took the spoils.

Skryne can be happy with this result but more importantly the performance.  Due to a large number of injuries to first team players a number of players had to move up to the Senior ranks and the Junior A team suffered as a result. However as always in Skryne there will always  be players just waiting for their chance to contribute to the club’s success. The younger players gained valuable experience and were well led by the more mature players.  Managers Eoin Greally and Cyril Carty can indeed be proud of their team and their own efforts in putting the team together.
