Skryne reach quarter-final!

Skryne 4-07 Clonard 1-10

Junior A Football Championship. Group B, Round 5

Skryne reached the quarter final of the Junior football Championship for the first time in a long number of years with this emphatic six point win over Clonard. At the beginning of this competition Skryne would have been long odds to reach this stage, but with a fine blend of youth and experience they are fully deserving of their place in the latter stages of this championship.

The final score in Sunday’s game flattered Clonard a little as Skryne had ample opportunities to to win by a much wider margin. Leading by 2-05 to 0-05 at half time the Blues had the luxury to take off one of their best players – Eoin Smyth – so he could join the Senior team as they prepared to play Ballinlough in the following match.

This seemed to unsettle Skryne’s mostly young team and Clonard quickly reduced the lead to two points scoring 1-01 without reply. But when they did reply it was conclusive as Skryne’s first two scores in this half were goals. Niall Morley finished expertly after a good team move restored confidence all over the field. This goal was a credit to Niall as he had missed one earlier when put clean through by Allan Carty but the antics of the Clonard goalkeeper had probably distracted him. The keeper had already made two excellent saves in the first half and when he saved again just after half time it could have unnerved lesser players. That Morley goal and another from the penalty spot by Allan Carty, after Vinny O’Reilly was fouled, finished the game as a contest even though our own keeper Dean Reddy also had to make an excellent save late on to prevent a second Clonard goal.

Once again, like last week, the strength of the Skryne panel came to the fore and the substitutes made a telling contribution to the victory particularly Vinny O’Reilly, Jason Reddy, Timmy Lennon (when he replaced the injured Barry Clarke) and Kevin O’Reilly who had just returned to fitness after a hurling injury.

The quarter final is against Dunshaughlin in Ashbourne on Monday, 22 August 2016 at 7:30pm.

Skryne – Dean Reddy. Dermot Brennan, Eoghan Greene, Barry Clarke. Paddy Carpenter (0-1), Martin Mulvaney, Darren Fox. David Lynch, David McGoldrick (0-1). Ronan McCabe, Eoin Smyth (0-1), Jason Fox. Allan Carty (2-1), Brian Smyth (0-1), Niall Morley (2-1).
Subs used – Jason Reddy, Vinny O’Reilly, Timmy Lennon, Kevin O’Reilly (0-1), John Quinn and Cian Lynch.
