Teach na Teamhrach Junior Football Championship – Round 5

This was the final group match in the Junior A Championship which was of little or no consequence to either teams apart from pride and the traditional rivalry. O’Mahonys were already qualified for the quarter final and Skryne were safe from relegation. Both teams were decimated from the players that started the Championship as normally happens to senior clubs. O’Mahonys rested some players while others were held back in case they were needed for the following senior game while Skryne had no such choice and played all the players available to them.

As a result the game may not have been as competitive as it usually is between these two sides. Skryne had nothing to lose and therefore started much brighter than the Town side and had 8 points on the board before O’Mahonys registered their first score on 18 minutes. But when they got going they scored 5 points without reply. By half time the game was in the balance with the score reading Skryne 0-9 Navan O’Mahonys 0-6.

The second half was closely contested and the teams were evenly matched with Skryne just edging it in the scoring department by 7 points to 6. By the 25th minute of this half O’Mahonys had levelled up the scores at 12 points each but Skryne finished much stronger and made the game safe with 4 unanswered points.

This was a very good team performance from the winners and all 17 players who competed can be justly proud of their days work. The team was a mixture of youth and experience and they all blended well together and with a little more luck in the earlier rounds could easily have qualified for the knockout stages of the Championship.

Skryne – Felim O’Rourke. Shane McEnroy, Dermot Brennan, Pauric Murphy. Timmy Lennon (0-1), James Looby, Niall Morley (0-2). David McGoldrick (0-1), Oisin Gryson (0-2). Declan Mulvey (0-1), Paddy Doherty, Paddy Carpenter (0-1). Sean Cassidy (0-1), Brian Smyth (0-1), Jason Fox (0-5).
Subs used – John Quinn and Nicky Hamill (0-1).
