LGFA U14 Football Championship. Division 8 – Round 3

Skryne faced a strong Simonstown Gaels team this morning in round 3 of the Division 8 Championship. It was defences on top in a low scoring game with Captain of the day Hannah Clarke marshalling the Skryne defence and keeping the Gaels at bay. Simonstown got the opening two points of the game, with Skryne on the backfoot for most of the opening quarter. Following the water break Skryne began to move the ball better. Full forward Grace Hollywood managed to find some space in front of the Simonstown goal and she made no mistake when she shot past the Simonstown keeper for a goal that put Skryne ahead for the first time in the game. A minute later Grace added a point to stretch Skryne’s lead. Rachel O’ Dowd was next to strike for Skryne with a point that saw Skryne lead by 1-02 to 0-02 at half time.

Simonstown were quick out of the traps in the second half with a point inside the opening minute of the half. Four minutes later, they took the lead with a well taken goal. They added a pointed free before Harriet Hayes got her name on the scoresheet with a fine point from the right hand side to leave the minimum between the sides. Elizabeth Fitzpatrick was unlucky to find the Simonstown keeper in fine form when she had two great efforts in a row saved on the line. Skryne had their own keeper Meabh Lynch to thank for keeping out a good shot from the Simonstown forward as both sides tried their hardest to win this game. It was all to play for in the final quarter and it was Skryne that struck first with Roisín Reeves sending over a point to level matters. However, Simonstown edged ahead again on the 20th minute, a lead which they held until the final whistle although Skryne had their chances to draw level.

Skryne battled hard as usual and had some fine performances. On another day they might have won this one.

It was not all bad news for Skryne. All 3 teams in the group had a win each. However, Skryne’s superior score difference saw them top the group and they now look forward to a semi-final against Donaghmore/Ashbourne.
