Skryne ease to victory over Gaeil Colmcille

Gaeil Colmcille 0-11 Skryne 3-13

Premier Football Championship. Division 1, Group B – Round 2.

On a beautiful but breezy evening in Grangegodden, Skryne turned on the style to register a second victory in Group B of the Premier Football Championship.

Skryne opted to play into the stiff breeze in the opening half and were ahead inside the opening minute when Ronan Mc Cabe received a pass from David McGoldrick and cooly slotted over from the right hand side. Colmcilles dominated the early exchanges and tacked on three points without a reply from Skryne. However a Jason Reddy converted free ensured there was the minimum between the sides as the game paused for the water break midway through the first half. The sides swapped scores upon the resumption with Jason Reddy nailing two more frees, while Gaeil Colmcille added a free and a point from play. Skryne then plundered their first goal of the game in the 26th minute when David McGoldrick put Kris Kinsella through on goal. Kris rounded the keeper and finished to the net. Two minutes later Niall Morley hit a delicious point with the outside of his boot from the right hand side to increase Skryne’s advantage. Kells responded with a point of their own and then Jason Reddy pointed brilliantly when he received a short free from John Morley to give Skryne a three point lead at half-time. Skryne did lose Aidan Tuite to a black card in first half injury time which meant they started the second half a man down for the opening ten minutes. Half-time score: Gaeil Colmcille 0-06, Skryne 1-06.

Despite the early numerical disadvantage, Skryne were first to trouble the scoreboard with the opening point another dinger from Niall Morley from the right hand side despite close attention from the Gaeil Colmcille defence. Kells hit three in a row to reduce the deficit to one point. Jason Reddy floated over another free. Skryne collected the kickout and Aidan Tuite managed to offload to David McGoldrick while kneeling on the ground, to send Farmer racing through the heart of the Kells defence closely followed by three Kells defenders. McGoldrick’s power kept the defenders at bay and he smashed the ball past the keeper for Skryne’s second goal. A minute later Skryne had a third goal when Ronan McCabe made a surging run at the Kells defence sucking in a number of defenders before squaring the ball to John Morley who made no mistake with only the keeper to beat. Kells hit a single in reply. From the kickout, Frank Carty caught the break and laid off to Ronan McCabe who advanced and struck another fine poit for Skryne. This was shortly followed by a John Morley free which he launched over from the left hand side near the sideline with the outside of his left peg. Jason Reddy pointed another free before Kells hit their last score of the game with five minutes remaining. Skryne added two more insurance scores from Neil Burke and then Jason Reddy with another free. Final score: Gaeil Colmcille 0-11, Skryne 3-13

Skryne are sitting pretty at the top of Group B with one game remaining against neighbours Seneschalstown.
