Goals make the difference for O’Mahonys

Skryne 0-10 Navan O’Mahonys 2-10

Hoganstand Senior Football Championship – Round 5

The second game in Simonstown  was not as fruitful for Skryne as the opening Junior match. Contested with the usual vigour by these two teams who have been keen rivals for over sixty years. Skryne shaded the first half but still found themselves behind at half time after conceding the usual goal on the 20 minute mark. The scoring plaudits in this half go to Patrick O’Rourke for Skryne and Jake Regan for O’Mahonys who shared at least 10 points between them. Skryne had five players to call on  whom they were without in the last game versus Donaghmore/Ashbourne. Harry Rooney, Niall Lenehan, Donie Ryan, Neal Burke and Conor O’Brien all returned to to the starting line up for Gordon Geraghty’s side. Mark Battersby and Paddy Fox also came off the bench to make almost half the team changed from the last match.

O’Mahonys out-scored Skryne in the second half by 1-4 to 0-3 in which the Blues were reduced to 14 men when midfielder Aidan Tuite receive a second yellow card but once again it was the concession of the goals which proved their downfall. While the goal in the first half was very well worked by O’Mahonys and was a very good score the one in the second half which turned the match very much in the Navan men’s favour was of the ‘soft’ variety. Goals win games is the saying and so it proved in this instance.

Skryne now go on to play near neighbours Dunshaughlin in the preliminary quarter final while O’Mahonys play Summerhill in the quarter final proper.

Skryne – Dean Reddy. Niall Lenehan, Ciaran Lenehan, Mark Harrington. Ronan McCabe (0-1), Thomas McKeown, Darragh Campion. Aidan Tuite, Harry Rooney. Donie Ryan, Neal Burke, Stephen O’Brien. Conor O’Brien, Patrick O’Rourke (0-7), Brian Davis.

Subs used – Mark Battersby (0-2), Paddy Fox, John Morley and Allan Carty
