Skryne Juniors were beaten in this Championship match in Kilmessan yesterday on a day of heavy hail showers and a cross field wind. Skryne were short four players – Dermot Brennan, Paddy Doherty, Jason Fox and Jamie Jordan – from the team which had won so well the previous Sunday against St. Bridget’s. Add this to the fact that no minors played because of their  Div 2 League Final fixed for the end of June meant the team was way short of full strength.

Having said that Summerhill were much more physical and determined on the day and were deserving winners. Skryne made it difficult for themselves by the concession of three goals – two from defensive errors and the third after a controversial decision by the Referee.

The first half was a close affair and with a bit of luck the Blues should have been in front at the break but found themselves behind on a scoreline of The Hill 1-6 Skryne 1-5. The Skryne goal coming from Declan Mulvey who was very unlucky not to have a second one in this half.

Early exchanges in the second half were also very close until the controversial goal midway through the half which put the Hill 4 points in front – 2-8 to 1-7 – and with it went the Blues resistance as Summerhill quickly tacked on 3 more points. Skryne to their credit tried hard and replied with 3 points of their own before the Hill killed off the game with their third goal.

For Skryne Cian Lynch was their best player on the day while Martin Mulvaney played his usual good game at full back. David Lynch played his heart out at midfield and Declan Mulvey was the pick of the forwards who were up against a very tight marking Summerhill rearguard.

Skryne – Felim O’Rourke. James Looby, Martin Mulvaney, Pauric Murphy. Allan Carty, Mark Harrington, Cian Lynch. David McGoldrick (0-1), David Lynch. Declan Mulvey (1-1) Neal Burke (0-4), John Quinn (0-1). Conor Keogh (0-1), Brian Smyth (0-1), Niall Morley.
Subs used – Kevin O’Reilly (0-1), David Harrington, Des McAvinney.
