The Blue Kings of Tara

by David Carty

Skryne Gaelic Football Club will launch  ‘A History of the GAA in Skryne, 1887–2010, The Blue Kings of Tara’ by David Carty on Friday 30th March 2012 at 8.30pm, in Killeen Castle, Dunsany, Co. Meath.

The history consists of 2 hardback volumes of approximately 800 pages each. The books are illustrated with historic photographs and colour sections within each volume. Both books are enclosed in a beautifully presented hardcover slipcase.

Please note this is a special limited edition of 750 copies only. Early ordering is advised. This complete package of two volumes and presentation case will retail at €50.

The volumes detail the history of the club from 1887 to 2010. The two volumes are structured decade by decade. A comprehensive detailing of every match report available, along with the history of the club is presented within the two volumes.

Volume I traces the history of the club from 1887 to 1979. In this first part, we encounter Skryne’s pioneering GAA forebears, Killana Shamrocks, in 1887. We rediscover the surprisingly many, now forgotten, GAA clubs that were active in Skryne during the latter part of the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. From these early proud beginnings, we follow the decades with contemporary reports that reveal the triumphs and tribulations of the Skryne GAA Club.

Volume 2 of The History of the GAA in Skryne, 1887–2010, continues the story of the club from 1980 through to 2010. From Feis Cup victories in the 1980s Skryne stormed into the 1990s. In 1992, the players won the Senior Football Championship for the first time in 27 years. In 1993, Skryne ensured they retained the Keegan Cup after defeating long time foes, Navan O’Mahonys. A new record for Skryne was achieved in 2004 when the club qualified for the Leinster Club Football final for the first time.

Our journey through Skryne’s illustrious GAA history concludes in 2010 with the excitement of the Senior Football Championship final and Skryne’s outstanding triumph.

The History of the GAA in Skryne, 1887–2010, is essential for anyone interested in the sporting and social history of the parish between 1887–2010.
