Minor Football Summer League, Division A – Semi Final

A jubilant Skryne Minor team gained sweet revenge over rivals Donaghmore/Ashbourne this evening as they marched on to the Final of the Division A Summer League. Donaghmore/Ashbourne had beaten them earlier in the Summer League in a stormy affair in Ashbourne.

Skryne looked in determined mood from the off and notched up 6 points without reply in the first 10 minutes of the game, with scores coming from Eoin Smyth, Jayo Fox (3 pts), Daragh Campion and Paddy Carpenter with help from the impressive Frank Carty . Donaghmore/Ashbourne were finding it hard to find any space at the other end as the Skryne defence were out quickly to close down any potential threats to the Skryne goal. Their first point came on 11 minutes with a good score from wide on the right hand side after some good link up play. Skryne notched up another score on 20 minutes when Eoin Smyth finished from a tight angle. Skryne’s last point of the half came from the boot of Robbie Clarke who slotted over a fine point from the 40 yard line. Donaghmore/Ashbourne finished off the scoring in the first half when they won a free and tapped it over. Skryne went in at half time with a healthy advantage leading by 0-08 to 0-02.

As expected Donaghmore/Ashbourne came out fighting after half-time and pushed forward looking for some early scores. They began to find their range and started chipping away at Skryne’s lead with 5 unanswered points. Meanwhile Skryne racked up about half a dozen wides at the other end and also had a chance at goal beaten away by the Donaghmore/Ashbourne goalkeeper. The deficit had been reduced to 1 point halfway through the second half and Skryne badly needed a score. The score eventually came on the 17th minute when Daragh Campion fielded a long range kickout from Dean Reddy, raced forward and then slipped the ball into Padraig Finnerty in the left corner. Padraig ran past his man near the endline before chipping the ball over the Donaghmore/Ashbourne keeper and into the net. Skryne added another point a minute later with a free from Daragh Campion. Skryne were back on top again and finished Donaghmore/Ashbourne off with 3 more points, 2 from Daragh and 1 from Jason Fox. Donaghmore/Ashbourne added one more to their tally before the end. Final score: Skryne 1-12 Donaghmore/Ashbourne 0-08.

Well done to all the Skryne lads. They play a great brand of football and we look forward to seeing them in the Summer League Final against St. Colmcilles.
