A League Division 1 – Round 7

After defeating Ballinlough in the SFC last Sunday Skryne had to fight all the way tonight in the A League match to prevent a reversal of that result. A draw was probably a fair result in this match as Ballinlough were determined to get revenge and were fired up from the start.

The scores were level after ten minutes of play – two points each – with John Morley getting both Skryne scores. In between those two points Skryne kicked six wides which almost proved costly at the end of a sometimes over-robust game. Referee Seamus O’Connor was forced to book a number of players from both sides and issued a black card to a Skryne player and a red card late in the game to a Ballinlough player.
Having said that the match as a spectacle was exciting because of the closeness of the scores and it took an excellent point from Ciaran Lenehan to draw Skryne level with a minute left on the clock.

Skryne led at half time by 1-4 to 0-3 but after 12 minutes of the second period the Reds had forged ahead having scored 1-3 to the Blues single point from Conor O’Brien. It was point for point from then until Lenehan’s levelling score.

Apart from Man of the Match Ciaran Lenehan, Skryne had good performances from his brother Neil and Tomás McKeown in defence. Further up the field with Mark Battersby being tightly marked the onus was on the other forwards to come up with the scores. John Morley certainly did that scoring 3 points and an excellent goal which he finished with the utmost confidence. Bryan Davis worked tirelessly throughout and made up a dangerous full forward line with Batts and top scorer Morley. The selectors introduced four substitutes to freshen things up late in the game when the pressure was on to get a favourable result and it almost worked.

Skryne – Ian Gillette. Neil Lenehan, Ciaran Lenehan (0-2), Mark Jordan. Ronan McCabe, Tomás McKeown, Adam O’Sullivan. Aidan Tuite, Donie Ryan. Paddy Fox, Stephen O’Brien, Conor O’Brien (0-1). John Morley (1-3), Bryan Davis (0-1), Mark Battersby (0-3).
Subs used – Vinny O’Reilly, Allan Carty, James Looby and Neil Burke.
