Skryne Struggle past Colmcilles

By josephobrien Sat 14th Jul

A late late point from Trevor Giles in the fourth minute of injury time saw Skryne through in this Feis cup match in Pilltown against Colmcilles on Friday night.  Skryne were first to score when Ian Davis kicked a long range point after only 1 minute of play but would have to wait until the 17 minute to get their second point from Mark Battersby.  In the meantime Colmcilles would post a goal and six points and were playing the better football in the crowded conditions in Pilltown.  However from the 17th minute until halftime Skryne scored 1 – 8 to a solitary point from Colmcilles leaving the score at the break Skryne 1 – 9 Colmcilles 1 – 7. The Skryne goal was scored by Davis who also posted a further two points in this quarter.  Battersby (2) McCabe, Carty, McKeown and Looby were also on target  Looby’s score was the score of the night who went for his point from over 50 meters out when nothing else was on.

Skryne added two more points in the opening minutes of the second half from Davis and McCabe but Colmcilles then scored three points on the trot to leave just the minimum between the sides. James Hegarty put two over for Skryne to increase the margin to three but Colmcilles levelled the match with a goal against the run of play on 40 minutes. The East Meath side now sensed that they might have a famous victory in their sights and went for the kill adding a further point and a third goal to leave the scores Skryne 1 – 13 Colmcilles 3 – 11 with 47 minutes on the match gone.   With the match going away from them, Skryne dug deep and began to claw back the points for a win.  First Battersby was on target on 48 minutes.  Jamie Jordan was introduced on 50 minutes and with his first touch he put the ball over the bar.  Battersby was on target again and with 54 minutes gone Trevor Giles drew the sides level.  Both sides now upped their game in an attempt to get a winning score and both sides had their chances.  However as a result of two long stoppages, one of them in injury time, the referee added a further 5 minutes to the proceedings.  In the fourth minute of the added time Trevor Giles found the range to hit the winning point for Skryne.
