2013 Skryne U10 Report

The season kicked off on March 1st.  Training sessions consisted of drills to develop the key skills; kicking, catching, pick-up, tackling, kick & hand passing, scoring practice and sessions culminate in a short 15-20 minute game.  We had a panel of 34 players registered and had excellent numbers throughout the year at training sessions and matches.  As per the new GAA guidelines it was compulsory for the kids to wear gum shields at both training sessions and at matches.

U10 Blitz Programme

The underage development & coaching section of Meath GAA under Dudley Farrell, organize and schedule an annual programme of Blitz Days to provide non competitive games for the U10s throughout the year.  Under the Blitz guidelines teams can be up to 11 a-side, games to last between 20-30 minutes.  The main aims are to ensure full participation of all players, with players to experience playing in both defence and attack, skills development and respect to opponents and referees.  Skryne U10s participated fully in these blitz days with us having between 2 and 3 squads available on blitz days.

Summerhill Challenge 2013:

Our U10s participated in the Summerhill Challenge 2014, a non competitive series of match organised annually by Summerhill GFC.  We played games, home and away against the following participating clubs Ratoath, Dunboyne, Summerhill,  Blackhall Gaels, Dunsany, Na Fianna, Trim and Dunshaughlin.  The games began in early June and continued throughout the summer.  Typically we fielded two 11 aside teams with each playing two 30 minute matches.  The finals days was held on Saturday 21st September in Summerhill.  On the day we play two games against both Ratoath and Enfield, winning both on the following scorelines, Skryne 5-16 Ratoath 3-3 and Skryne 6-14 Enfield 6-6.  Afterwards the lads were presented with their tournament medals & some refreshments provided by Summerhill GFC.

Gowna Tournament:

In September the U10s travelled to Loch Gowna in Cavan to participate in their annual U10 Tournament.  This is a competitive tournament, with 24 teams drawn from clubs in Meath, Dublin, Down, Monaghan, Longford and Cavan.  Teams were 11 a side, divided into 6 groups of four with the group winners and two best runner up sides progressing to Q/Finals for the Brady Memorial Cup.

Skryne were grouped with Lacken, Cavan Gaels and Round Towers.  After the opening round Skryne topped their group having won all of their opening 3 matches.  In the Q/Final game we defeated Dromlane from Cavan.  In the semi-final Skryne played hosts Loch Gowna.  Unfortunately our excellent run came to an end in this match.  Loch Gown got off to a great start and dominated the first half.  Despite a much stronger performance in the 2nd half Skryne were unable to clawback the gap and exited the competition on a scoreline of 4-4 to 2-3.  Gowna went on to win the final outright defeating Kilmacud Crokes from Dublin in the decider

Results from Gowna Tournament

Skryne 4-2           Lacken 1-3

Skryne 4-2           Cavan Gaels 1-1

Skryne 3-4           Roundtowers 3-0

Q/Final                 Skryne 1-1           Dromlane0-0

Semi Final            Skryne 2-3           Loch Gowna 4-4

This was an excellent tournament, very well organised and proved to be a great day out for the lads.  Despite the disappointment of loosing at the semi-final stage the lads can be proud of the performances as this was their first ever competitive tournament.

End of Season:

In conjunction with WolfeTones U10s we organised a short challenge game for the U10s to be played during the half time break of the Senior C’ship Q/Final game between Skryne and WolfeTones.  This was a great experience for the lads and one hopes that it will not be long before these young lads are back in Pairc Tailteann to compete for Silverware.  For our end of season game we hosted Newbridge Sarsfield U10s from Kildare.  We had a number of very enjoyable games with the Skryne boys coming out on top in 3 of the four games played.  A special thanks to all of the parents who helped out on the day providing snacks and refreshments.

Young Whistlers

In March of this year we arranged for three Skryne Juvenile players; Jason Reddy, Jason Fox and Eoin Smith to undertake the Meath GAA young whistler training.  The lads then refereed a number of our games & blitz days throughout the year.  A sincere thanks to the lads for their time, and their refereeing was very well received and appreciated by ourselves and opposition clubs.
