St. Vincents/Curraha 1-08, Skryne 4-15

U19 Football League Division 1 – Round 2

Skryne followed up their first round victory over St. Peter’s, Dunboyne with another fine victory over St. Vincents/Curraha in the Under 19 League this evening in Ardcath.

The teams agreed to play 13 aside due to lack of players in the St. Vincents/Curraha squad. In the first quarter of the match, the Skryne boys were lording the possession stakes but on 18 minutes the scoreboard read 0-04 each with the St. Vincents/Curraha keeper keeping Skryne at bay with a couple of fine saves in the first half. However, Skryne got the breakthrough goal on 23 minutes with Colm Craigie bursting forward and finishing to the net. 3 points from Darragh Campion and 1 from Colm Doherty with St. Vincents/Curraha grabbing a solitary free saw Skryne march into a 1-08 to 0-05 lead at at half time.

St. Vincents/Curraha started the second half very brightly and staged something of a comeback scoring 1-02 inside the first 3 minutes of the half leaving just a point between the teams. However, Skryne settled back into the game and took control from then on with Frank Carty, who tormented his opposite number all night, kicking things off with a point followed by a fine goal from a tight angle. Colm Doherty followed this up with his second point of the game. Darragh Campion added a further 3 points to his tally of 10 points (5 from play) before Skryne bagged the score of the game, a move which stemmed from Colm Craigie breaking up play in defence. Skryne worked the ball up the field in a mesmerising move involving most of the team with Eoin Smyth putting the finishing touches on it by blasting to the back of the net. Skryne’s substitutes also made telling contributions, in particular Michael Long who was very impressive in defence and Craig Nolan who bagged Skryne’s 4th goal.

St. Vincents/Curraha fought hard and continually probed at the Skryne defence, but excellent work from the Skryne rearguard restricted them to only 1 more point for the remainder of the half. Skryne ran out easy winners on a scoreline of St. Vincents/Curraha 1-08, Skryne 4-15.
