B League Division 1 – Round 1

Donaghmore/Ashbourne and Skryne kicked off their B League Division 1 campaigns yesterday evening in Ashbourne in a game where defences dominated throughout ensuring that scores were few and far between. Donaghmore/Ashbourne opened the scoring with a point from play with 4 minutes on the clock. Skryne showed lots of endeavour but didn’t trouble the scoreboard until the 13th minute when John Morley tapped over a free. Three quickfire points from the Ashbourne men midway through the half and another as halftime approached saw them race into a four point lead, which was sizeable given the scarcity of scores. On the stroke of half-time Jason Reddy slotted over Skryne’s second point of the game with a pointed free to leave the half-time score: Donaghmore/Ashbourne 0-05, Skryne 0-02.

Skryne upped their performance in the second half and set about closing the gap from the off. John Morley fired over 2 early points while Jason Reddy added another free leaving the sides level after only 9 minutes of the half. Donaghmore/Ashbourne won a penalty midway through the half, but Ian Gillett was up to the task and dived to his right to make a superb save for the Skrynemen. Donaghmore/Ashbourne tacked on another point a minute later to take a slender lead. Skryne scored a superb point in the closing stages of the game when Jack Dardis stole forward from his corner back position and was found free on the edge of the penalty area. He squared the ball to David McGoldrick who tapped over to level the match. Skryne pushed forward looking for the winner, but could not find the target registering three wides in the last 2 minutes. Donaghmore/Ashbourne snatched the victory with a last gasp point which was to deny the Skrynemen in a game which neither team deserved to lose.
