B League Division 1, Round 3

Skryne arrived in Ashbourne on Tuesday with 3 wins already bagged in this Division, with victories over Dunshaughlin, Simonstown and St. Peter’s of Dunboyne secured in Rounds 1,2 and 4. Donaghmore/Ashbourne too, had had a solid start to their campaign with 2 wins and 1 loss in their opening matches. The scene was set for a tough, tight encounter.

Following the recent bout of dry weather, the pitch, Ashbourne’s second pitch, was rock hard. The weather was dry with the rain holding off but a stiff breeze blew directly down the pitch towards the pavillion. Skryne faced into this breeze in the first half. Despite the wind, Skryne were quick out of the starting blocks and registered the first 2 points of the game through Patrick Fox and Ronan McCabe. Donaghmore/Ashbourne got off the mark with a point a minute later before they rattled the back of the Skryne net on the 10th minute with a deflected goal. David Lynch pulled one back for Skryne, but it was Donaghmore/Ashbourne who ramped things up and tagged on a further 8 points without reply. Skryne finished the half with the last 2 scores, points from Paddy Doherty and a second for David Lynch. The half-time score was Donaghmore/Ashbourne 1-10, Skryne 0-05.

The 8 point deficit was by no means insurmountable and with the wind, Skryne would have been expected to mount some sort of a comeback in the second half. However, it was Donaghmore/Ashbourne who looked the more determined and they increased their lead by adding 4 points on the trot in the opening minutes of the half. Brian Smyth, Skryne’s best player on the day, a man who never fails to put in a shift and Niall Morley reduced the deficit with a point each. Donaghmore/Ashbourne grabbed a further 3 points to extend their lead. Niall Morley and John Quinn finished off Skryne’s scoring in the second half, but for each of these scores, Donaghmore/Ashbourne got one of their own. The final score in Ashbourne was Donaghmore/Ashbourne 1-19, Skryne 0-10
