Superb Effort From Skryne’s Second String!

B League Division 1 – Round 7

What a game this Skryne team played in ideal conditions in this B League Division 1 match in Skryne tonight (Tuesday). Skryne struggled to get 15 players whereas Donaghmore Ashbourne had 7 substitutes to pick from. With six players playing their second game in 24 hours and Timmy Lennon, Dermot Brennan, Jack Conroy, Colm Craigie, Andrew Moore and Darren Fox playing their 3rd game in five days this team was on a hiding to nothing. The holders of this competition Donaghmore Ashbourne were hot favourites to win this game and perhaps the whole competition but nobody must have told the Skryne team who were on top from the start right up to the last five minutes. The Blues Andrew Moore succumbed to injury probably caused by fatigue and one of the coaches had to fill in as an emergency substitute. None of these setbacks seemed to hinder the performance of Skryne and they deservedly led at half time by double scores 0-6 to 0-3.

Don/Ash improved immensely in the second half and outscored the home side by 1-7 to 0-3 over the 30 minutes. But with Skryne still leading by 0-7 to 0-5 the crucial score arrived with about seven minutes to go. The Skryne defence were caught dallying a little when trying to clear their lines and in the ensuing melee the ball was finished to the net to give Don/Ash the lead for the first time in the match. They added three more points to go four clear before two Allan Carty frees brought the Blues back within two points of the Dublin border side with two minutes left to play. Don/Ash did finish strongly with another point from play and a controversial free kick to close the scoring and a flattering four point win.

All sixteen players who lined out for Skryne tonight can be rightly very proud of their efforts in very difficult circumstances where they ran a very strong Don/Ash team so close.

Skryne – Des McAvinney. Jack Conroy, Michael Doherty, Timmy Lennon. Andrew Moore (0-1), Dermot Brennan, Keith Donoghue. David Lynch, David McGoldrick (0-1). Darren Fox, Colm Craigie (0-3), Frank Carty (0-1). Sean Byrne, Allan Carty (0-3), John Quinn.

Sub – Darren Carty.
