B League Division 2 – Round 6

Skryne arrived in Enfield with a threadbare squad for this evening’s B League, Division 2 match against Na Fianna. Upon arrival Skryne were informed that the County Board had postponed the game. Somehow the message had not been relayed to the teams as the Na Fianna team were all present and accounted for as were Skryne. All that was required was a referee. After making the long trip over, Skryne were relieved when a referee who had been officiating at an underage game on the main pitch, agreed to step in and referee the B League match, allowing the fixture to be played.

The relief was shortlived for Skryne as Na Fianna’s young team, which featured many of the strong minor team from last year, got into their stride early on and opened up a 4 point lead by the quarter hour mark with 6 points to Skryne’s 2. Paul Bannon and Skryne stalwart Johnny Quinn were on target with 2 good efforts from play while 2 Allan Carty frees accounted for Skryne’s remaining scores of the half. Skryne were unlucky to lose Niall Lenehan through injury midway through the half. He was Skryne’s best player up to that point. Na Fianna showed some good movement and passing throughout and were very economic in front of goals. By half-time they lead by 8 points on a scoreline of Na Fianna 0-12, Skryne 0-04.

Na Fianna continued their dominance in the second half and racked up point after point. They could also have had a goal or two, but for some wayward shooting and a fine double save from Felim O’Rourke who kept a clean sheet despite the barrage. Andrew Moore was unlucky not to hit the back of the net for Skryne as he raced forward through the heart of the Na Fianna defence and sent a bullet of a shot towards the Na Fianna goal. He was denied by a fine save from the substitute keeper who parried it away and then saved the follow up to maintain his clean sheet. Johnny Quinn bagged a second point to cap a fine performance, while Andy Moore added another for Skryne with another foray forward from his full back position. 2 frees and one from play from Allan Carty completed Skryne’s scoring. However, it was mostly damage limitation throughout as Na Fianna hoovered up the lions share of possession and were clinical in front of goals, racking up 24 points by the end of the game.

Skryne had some excellent performances on the night particularly from Niall Lenehan before his early departure. Andrew Moore, Johnny Quinn, James Looby and Shane McEnroy all had good spells and the team can be proud that they continued to fight right until the end despite the strong opposition and also with some having played in the B League Division 1 game yesterday evening. Final score: Skryne Na Fianna 0-24, Skryne 0-09.
