Skryne win season opener

Curraha 0-07 Skryne 0-11

Feis Cup. Group B, Round 1

Skryne drew neighbours Curraha in Round 1 of the Feis Cup in this year’s season opener. Both teams have only recently commenced training after the winter break, but despite this served up an entertaining game in front of a sizeable crowd.

Skryne started brightest and found themselves 4 points ahead with only 8 minutes on the clock. Conor O’Brien got Skryne off the mark when his shot off the outside of his boot sailed over the bar. Harry Rooney who had a fine game in midfield for Skryne fired over Skryne’s second from a narrow angle, before Jason Reddy(a free) and Ian Davis added to Skryne’s tally. Curraha converted a free on the 14th minute to register their first score. Despite the bright opening and dominance in the possession stakes, Skryne found scores hard to come by and should have been much further ahead but for a succession of wides. Eoin Smyth manufactured a goal chance on the 24th minute of the half, but his shot sailed wide of the target much to the relief of the Curraha defence.  Skryne finally found their 5th point with 2 minutes remaining in the half when Mark Battersby stroked over a free. Curraha replied with a free of their own to leave the half-time score Curraha 0-02, Skryne 0-05.

Harry Rooney’s second point of the game was the opening score of the second half, but it was Curraha that dominated the third quarter as they chipped away at Skryne’s lead, scoring 4 points (3 frees) without a reply from Skryne to see the sides level with 12 minutes gone in the half. Mark Battersby pointed a free for Skryne to stem the tide and restore Skryne’s lead. Curraha lost their centre back to a second yellow card as Skryne began to exert pressure on the ‘Ha defence. The score of the game came in the 20th minute when Harry Rooney burst through the heart of the Curraha defence before laying off to Conor O’Brien who blasted over. Substitute Frank Carty punched over after slipping past his marker along the endline and squeezing the ball between the uprights. Conor O’Brien’s 3rd point of the game gave Skryne a 4 point cushion with 6 minutes remaining. The sides swapped scores in the last few minutes with Curraha bagging their final point, another free to leave a goal between the teams. Eoin Smyth slotted over a well deserved point to secure the victory for Skryne. Final score: Curraha 0-7, Skryne 0-11.
