Feis Cup. Group B – Round 4

Skryne travelled to Pilltown for this Feis Cup match against St. Colmcilles but came away empty handed after this defeat, their second in the competition. The scoreline probably doesn’t do justice to the effort the lads put into this game which was in the melting pot right up to the final whistle. In fact after 28 minutes of the second half Skryne were back within 2 points of the winners and looked like getting something out of the game as they attacked continuously to get level.  But one of their moves broke down at a vital stage and the vastly experienced Graham Reilly scored a very important point to seal victory for the Cilles. This score put 3 points between the teams going into injury time meaning Skryne needed a goal rather than points to level the match. Instead St. Colmcilles tagged on two points deep into time added on to make sure of a 5 point win for the Laytown men.

Skryne began the game better than their rivals and looked as if they could make it three victories in the competition as they led by five points to two after 15 minutes. Six different Skryne players got on the scoresheet during the first half in which they were on top for the first 25 minutes. But in those last five minutes of the half St. Colmcilles outscored Skryne by 1-4 to 0-2, their goal coming from the penalty spot after some rather poor football from the Blues. This left 4 points between the sides 1-9 to 0-8 at half time meaning Skryne never recovered from the concession of that penalty goal.

The way football is played nowadays at a helter skelter pace it’s almost impossible to win with just 15 players so therefore the substitutes used always make a difference to the play. And so it proved in this match when the changes were made and fresh legs helped on a very warm humid evening. The highlight of this half was the contribution on Niall Finnerty, who when introduced at half time proceded to score 5 excellent points from his right wing position. The other half time substitute Ciaran Lenehan also got on the scoresheet.
The forwards always get most of the praise because of their scoring exploits but on this occasion the defenders came out on top particularly Niall Lenehan, Eoghan Greene and Timmy Lennon.
