Na Fianna 6-16 Skryne 3-12

U17 Football League, Semi-final

A poor first half performance from Skryne saw Na Fianna build an unassailable lead to allow them to advance to the Division 1 League Final against Donaghmore/Ashbourne on Sunday.  Weather conditions were poor with wind and rain the order of the night in Dunganny.

Na Fianna had the benefit of the wind in the first half and Skryne would have hoped to keep their scoring to a minimum in order to capitalise in the second half once they had wind advantage. Early on, Skryne seemed in control of the game. Na Fianna got off the mark with a point in the 3rd minute. A Daragh Campion free cancelled this score out. Na Fianna notched on another 2 points, before Skryne replied with a second free from Daragh. Skryne had a couple of other chances which dropped short into the keeper’s hands. Na Fianna pointed again on the 14th minute and then hit a purple patch where they scored 3 goals in 3 minutes stretching their lead to 12 points.  They followed these goals with 2 more points before hitting the back of the net again on 23 minutes. Meanwhile Skryne found it very difficult to get any sort of foothold in the game, scoring only 2 points in the first half. Half-time couldn’t come quick enough for Skryne who were stunned by the first half Na Fianna onslaught which ended on a scoreline of 4-08 to 0-02, an 18 point gap.

Skryne had a better half in the second half in which they scored 3-10. However, their eagerness to reduce the enormous half-time deficit, meant that they left themselves open to counter attacks and Na Fianna proved more then capable of punishing Skryne on these occasions, registering  2-07 themselves despite playing against the wind.

Na Fianna opened the scoring in the second half with a point from play from their troublesome no. 15. Skryne then scored 4 points without reply, 2 frees from Daragh Campion and a point each from play from Colm Doherty and Colm Mc Loughlin, before Na Fianna’s impressive right half back grabbed a nice point from play. Skryne got their first goal of the game through Darren Fox on the 11th minute of the half reducing the deficit to 13 points, but all of this good work was undone when Na Fianna scored a goal and a point almost immediately pushing the gap back up to 17 points. The match was slipping away from Skryne with Na Fianna determined in defence and clinical in attack. Skryne continued to battle away, scoring 4 of the next 5 points, 3 frees from Daragh and a point from the lively Frankie Carty. Skryne were again made to pay for leaving the back door open, when Na Fianna hammered the final nail in Skryne’s coffin with their 6th goal on 53 minutes. Scoreline at this stage was 6-12 to 1-10. Daragh Campion got Skryne’s second goal almost immediately, but it was cancelled out when Na Fianna scored the next 4 points on the trot.  Skryne did finish strongly with a superb long range point from Michael Doherty, a point for Darren Fox and finally a goal from Eoin Smyth deep into injury time.

Skryne were beaten by a hungrier Na Fianna outfit on the night who produced a clinical first half display and had an answer for everything Skryne threw at them in the second half. The final score from Dunganny was Na Fianna 6-16 Skryne 3-12.
